☀zumba and a thought

{I was reminded of this post I started a while back when Hazel and I went to aerobics, which was a zumba class today.}

A sister in our stake who teaches zumba came to visit our ward and shared a thought with our Young Women. She also gave us a personal zumba lesson, it was awesome. Barett even tried out his moves, much to the dismay of the young women, I'm sure.

Her thoughts touched me so much, here are my notes from what she shared... She talked about how her mom would talk to her and her sisters as they were young women getting ready for school. {I can just imagine sisters getting ready together, crowding the bathroom at home.} They were encouraged to do things to be healthy spiritually and physically. She said her mom would say, it's ok to make yourself look nice, do what you need to do to be healthy and presentable... but once you leave the house after you have gotten ready, it's no longer about you.

I like this advice, for myself. I like this advice because I have two girls of my own. As women we want to look pretty and be attractive. I remember a talk given by Sister Sheri Dew, where she mentions spending a little less time in front of the mirror. I think we can be caught up in the things of the world and how we look or what others think about us, but it is not a bad thing to want to look nice, cute, presentable and to put our best foot forward. So the zumba teacher's thought really put everything together for me.

"Once you leave the house, it's no longer about you." -zumba teacher

"No amount of time in front of the mirror will make you as attractive as having the Holy Ghost with you." -Sheri Dew

"Forget yourself and go to work." -Pres. Hinckley

I shared this message with my Maren before she left for her first day of school. We had bought her some new clothes and she was very excited about that, but I wanted her to know that it wasn't about new clothes. The idea of picking her favorite outfit to wear and then leaving the house thinking of how she could help others really resonated with her. So I am grateful for the visiting Zumba teacher (I don't remember her name) who shared such a wonderful thought that has really impacted me and my family.

That is such a great thought and probably one many of us could benefit from (I hope I'm not the only one!!) I love that you are instilling it in your children. It is so important to teach them these truths when they are young.

Thanks for sharing these thoughts today! I try to share the same thoughts with my girls too but sometimes I forget. Hopefully where I lack in actual words I can make up for by example.
